Mother Matrix
Participants: Finley Baker, Tonia Bonnell, Katie Christensen, Courtney Googe, Julia Goos, Melissa Haviland, Gesine Janzen, Lisa Lofgren, Adriana Martinez, Dianna Miguez-Kochan, Amanda Peterson, Sarah Anne Shearer, and Sarah Smelser.

Statement: Mother Matrix is an open portfolio dedicated to establishing connections with other printing moms, and encourage a shared commitment to set aside required time dedicated to studio practice.

The portfolio stemmed from the desire to address the reality of motherhood by recognizing the need for a supportive community and the ability to be autonomous artists. For the founding mothers, collage has been the means for connecting our past artistic selves with our present lives.

Our goal with the variable edition is to offer the chance to use previously printed materials and make discoveries with collage, drawing, and other printing techniques. It affords a flexible way of working incrementally in a wide range of locations while embracing the time limits on the studio that come with motherhood.

The founding mothers would like multiple generations of Mother Matrix, and have the goal of offering this portfolio every other year, in addition to growing the network of nurturers connected through Facebook and other online social groups that may arise from the community.

Statement: Stitchers and Printers is an invitational portfolio exchange featuring 18 artists, curated by Micah Zavacky. Each print in this portfolio exchange is a collaboration between two artists, as well as the stitched and printed work, resulting in nine prints.

Each of the nine artist teams determined the nature of their collaboration and their interpretation of historical printmaking practice, as it pertains to production. Teams were asked to translate historical methodologies and roles--image designer, plate-maker, printer, and publisher--into collaborative process pertinent to the contemporary print practice.

A joint aim of this exchange is to highlight the handmade mark, both through the act of sewing or embroidering and printing a matrix that has been created through direct and physical manipulation.

This portfolio hopes to question, and possibly bridge what is made at home and what is made in the studio. Additionally, these prints reflect the vulnerability and trust necessary for a positive and successful artist collaboration.
